Reading News Using Tin

Overview

The TIN news reader on the Unix systems is a friendly, easy to use news reader system which is a menu based (point and shoot) news reader with a complete set of features especially suited to the novice user.

This document explains the following procedures using TIN:

Entering The Tin Environment

To use the TIN News Reader, at the dante% prompt, type: tin then press RETURN.

The first time you use the TIN News Reader, the terminal will display a Welcome screen to introduce you to the News reader. The Welcome srceen will also introduce the help command which is availiable at any time throughout this program. To continue just PRESS RETURN

To Subscribe/Unsubscribe To News Groups:

The next screen that you are presented with is the selected Groups screen. This list of groups are the groups that are selected to be read. At the left of each group name is a "u" for unsubscribed. Once a group has been selected the "u" to the le ft of the title will disappear. At the bottom of the screen a message will state which topic name has been subscribed to. To select additional groups press the "y" key on the keyboard. y this yank command will introduce all of the groups that are available for you to read. To subsribe to one of the news groups just use the arrow keys to highlight the News Group and press the"s" key on the keyboard. This will mark the News Group with a letter "s" which signifies that you have subscribed t o that News Group.

The flags are the letters that are in the first column of the Group Selection listing. To Unsubscribe from the News Group simply press the u key on the keyboard. This will mark the News Group with a letter "u" which signifies that you have unsubscribed to that News Group.

Reading News Articles

To read the News Articles in a News Group simply move the cursor with the arrow keys to the News Group that you wish to read and press RETURN.

After pressing RETURN you will receive an Article listing for the News Group that you choose. These Articles are marked as unread by the '+' symbol after the article number. To read the Article simply move the cursor with the arrow keys to the Article y ou wish to read and press RETURN.

After pressing RETURN you will be presented with the first Article to read. To continue forward through the Article simply press the SPACE BAR and the Article will advance to the next page.

To quit out of any one of these stages simply press 'q' to quit. This will move you back towards the beginning and will take you all the way out of the Tin News Reader.

To receive a summary listing of commands at any point in the Tin News Reader simply press the 'h' key on the keyboard. This will bring up a brief listing of the avaiable commands.
