The function of www.nmsu.edu is to provide colleges, departments, student clubs and other organizations related to NMSU, a platform to provide information to the Internet community, via the World Wide Web. Sub-functions include any related services needed to achieve this goal (i.e. e-mail, editors, CGI access, etc.) ACCOUNTS College/Departmental Accounts College and departmental accounts provide information about the department as a whole and sub-functions of the department. Departmental accounts are not to be used to deliver course material. Staff and faculty who wish to publish personal information or course related materials should obtain an account on the general Information & Communication Technologies servers. Hyperlinks to these pages are allowed from the departmental homepage. More information about these services can be found by calling the Information Center at 646-1840, or via the World Wide Web at http://www.nmsu.edu/IC/servapp.html Student Organizations Accounts are allocated for ASNMSU chartered student organizations. If an organization should lose its charter, the account will be deleted. CONTENT REVIEW/ACCOUNT INACTIVITY The home pages of the organizations are visited on a per-semester basis to ensure the information is current. All accounts are also reviewed for their login activity on the machine. College/Departmental Accounts Departmental pages that have not been reviewed in six months will be contacted via both email and phone. If a departmental page has not been reviewed or account accessed in over a year, an attempt will be made to contact the responsible person as well as the department head. If this contact is shown to be ineffective, it will be recommended to University Communications that the account and associated pages be removed from the machine and all links removed from the NMSU homepage. Student Organizations Student organizations whose pages that have not been reviewed or account accessed will be contacted via email to the established contact person. If this contact is shown to be ineffective, the account, all pages and links to the associated pages will be removed. SECURITY Passwords In order to maintain a secure environment, account passwords are regularly entered in a password-breaking program in attempt to guess the password. If an account's password is broken, the owner of the account will be notified and asked to change the password. Failure to change the password will result in the locking of the account, until the owner of the account agrees to change the password. Continued refusals to change the password will result in the loss of the account. Account/Password Sharing The number of people with access to an account should be kept to a minimum. Only people related to the organization should have access. Under no circumstances should a password to be given out to a person that is not known or unrelated to the department or organization. FEES Accounts Any I & G supported group on campus can obtain an account on www.nmsu.edu at no charge. Non-I&G funded organizations will be charged $25 a year. In the case where an I &G organization has a non-I&G subgroup, the subgroup will be charged. Disk Usage Disk space is limited at 50 megabytes for college & departmental accounts and 20 megabytes for student organization accounts. Any organization (I &G or not), will be charged for excess disk space usage at the rate of $10/10Mb/month. Charges will be calculated at 10Mb increments on a monthly basis. There will be no pro-rating. OTHER SERVICES Domain Hosting Domain hosting (http://www.yourorganization.org) for NMSU organizations is supported.
