Computer Account Policies & Procedures

[Last updated: 10 Jul 2001]

Types of Accounts

What is a computer account at ICT (Information and Communication Technologies)?

The following describes (and somewhat prescribes) what an account is at NMSU:

Standard Account:

One standard account is provided to all faculty, staff, students and retirees at NMSU. One free account only. Categories may be changed, e.g., Student to Staff, Faculty to Retiree. Standard accounts are billed against ICT's I&G budget.

Services on Standard Accounts:

  • Internet access

  • 10 MB of initial Disk Space (can be increased to 25MB on request without additional fee)

  • e-mail

  • web publishing

  • UNIX login (telnet, ftp, etc.)

  • access to the lab computers with direct network connections

  • standard dial-up modem pool access

A standard account will remain active as long as the person is associated with NMSU. When the association stops, the account will be purged after a 4 month grace period. When an account is scheduled for purging, we will give warning notices over a 1 month period. Hence, an account will remain active for a total of 5 months after the association stops. A retiree account will be purged after one semester of inactivity.

Additional Services:

Billed to departmental account by Fund Number. [CASH, or ICT I&G budget if approved].

Services include:

  • Additional disk space ($10/year per 10MB, non-prorated)

  • Additional account ($60/year non-prorated)

  • Department or School 'Office ' account, ($60/year non-prorated) only billed to departmental account by Fund Number

  • All other activities -- ICT hourly rate ($50/hour)

Additional services paid for by CASH will need to be renewed each July. Failure to pay will result in a locked account in 1 month.

Departmental supported services will be charged in July if these services are continued. Users must inform ICT of changes to service requests PRIOR to July 1. Failure of notice will result in fees being charged during our yearly charging cycle.

Acquiring these services:

Standard account: Web based application. Users identify themselves and will be able to acquire an account.

Additional disk space from 10MB to 25MB may be requested via the Information Center in the ICT Building [help@nmsu.edu].

Additional Services:

Fill out application form in Customer Service Center. CSC inputs data and submits the application to be approved by the ICT business office. The ICT business office verifies appropriate Fund Number or Cash amount and approves the additional service.

For additional services using ICT I&G funds, approval from the ICT Director or his/her designee will be required. The CSC will input the request. The ICT business office will approve the request after receiving approval from the Director's office.

You may request an account or service in the following ways:

  • Submit the Web-based form.

  • Send an e-mail to reqic@nmsu.edu with the required information;

  • Fill out the paper form available in the Customer Service Center;

IBM Mainframe (VM/CMS)

VM/ESA - Departmental

This is a general account on the IBM mainframe. Primarily used for data analysis and programming. Has e-mail capability. Charged to Departmental funds.

VM/CMS - Instructional

These accounts are not charged to Departmental funds; however, a Fund Number is required for record-keeping purposes. (A VITI*** type charge code is used.) Account expires at the end of the instructional period, i.e., semester or summer session. The account will be assigned to the Department to make it easier to reassign to different instructors. The instructors can share the accounts with graders or assistants as long as the accounts are used for their intended purpose.

Electronic Lists

A List is an electronic discussion group.

Account Costs

List (departmental)

An annual renewal fee of $30 is charged for each non-archived Departmental list. An archived Departmental list costs $60 per year.

List (instructional)

Annual renewal is required. The annual period runs from July 1 to June 30. Instructional Lists expire each June 30, unless renewal is requested by a List-owner in writing (or e-mail). More info. Even though not charged to Departmental funds, a Fund Number is required for record-keeping purposes.

List Naming Conventions

Departmental Lists can have any reasonable name not already in use.

  • Instructional Lists must have the name of the class (section optional), e.g., bcs338, oecs255_3.

  • Instructional lists whose names do not reflect a class designation must must be prefixed with 'i-' to indicate it is an instructional list, e.g., i-swbf or i-nrg-l and be commented to indicate the class(es) they are for.

  • Instructional lists may have the suffix -l (dash-el) to differentiate them from regular e-mail accounts.
