Dial-up Configuration for Windows 95/98

  1. Double click on the My Computer icon.  Double click on Dial-Up Networking (If you do not see the Dial-Up Networking icon, Skip down to the Note at the end of Dial-Up Networking Settings).

 
  1. Double click on Make New Connection . Type NMSU-Net for the name of computer you are dialing. Select your modem if Windows has not already and click on the Next button.
  2. Enter "505" as the area code, "6464942" as the phone number. and "United States of America (1)" as Country code. (If you use the premium service dial 647-8694, 647-8695 or 646-2500 For V.90 NOTE: Premium is a pay service. If you wish to use premium contact 646-4241) Click Next , then Finish.  You have successfully created a new Dial-Up connection.

  3. Now click on your NMSU-Net icon, and while holding down the left mouse button, drag the icon on to your desktop. A box will appear stating that you can not move this icon, and asks you if you would like to make a shortcut to it. Click Yes.

  1. In the Dial-Up Networking window, RIGHT CLICK on the NMSU-Net icon, select properties. Click on Servers. Click on TCP-IP Settings. Select Server Assigned IP Address. Select Specify Name Server Addresses. Enter Primary DNS 128.123.3.5 Enter Secondary DNS 128.123.2.19 Click OK.

  1. To connect to NMSU, double-click on the shortcut to NMSU icon on your desktop.
    If you are calling from on-campus, click on "DialProperties." Put a "8" in the box
    labeled, "To access an outside line." You only have to do this the first time.
    To disable Call Waiting, (On Campus) dial *41#

    If you are calling from OFF-CAMPUS and your phone line has call waiting
    (Off Campus) dial *70, (NOTE: If you do not have call waiting and you place
    the '*70' in the box you will not be able to connect.)

Note: If you see the error, "You must install Windows 95/98 Dial-Up Networking before using this option," complete the steps below and re-install again.)

  1. From Windows 95/98 click on Start, then Settings, then Control Panels.
  2. In the Control Panels screen click on Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the Add/Remove Program Properties screen click on the Windows Setup tab and double click on Communications under the Components listed.
  4. Check the box for Dial-Up Networking. Click OK.
  5. Now click on Apply and OK.

b. Network Settings
  1. Click on Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.

 
(The Installed Network Components)
  1.  Double click on Network. Your 'Configuration' should include: Client for Microsoft Networks, Dial-Up Adapter, and TCP/IP . It is alright if you see other components, however, Client for Microsoft Networks needs to be listed first. Then look where it says Primary Network Logon and make sure that it reads Client for Microsoft Networks 

  1. If you see those three components, click Cancel; skip proceed to Connecting. If you do not see those three components complete steps 4 - 8.

    Note: You may need the Windows95/98 CD-ROM or installation diskettes to complete these instructions. Do not delete anything unless you have the CD-ROM or diskettes!
  1. Open the 'Network' window (steps 1 and 2 above).
  2. To add Client for Microsoft Networks and Dial-Up Adapter, click on Add... The next screen says, 'Select Network Component Type'. Click on Client, then click Add.The next screen is 'Select Network Client'. Click on Microsoft under manufacturers then click on Client for Microsoft Networks under network clients. Click OK.
  3. Note: A window labelled 'Select Device' may appear.  Under 'Manufacturers' scroll down to Microsoft.  Click Microsoft, then click Dial-Up Adapter under 'Models'.  Click OK. You may be asked for the Windows 95/98 CD-ROM.
  4. To add TCP/IP click on Add... The next screen says, 'Select Network Component Type'. Click Protocol, then Add. In the 'Select Network Protocol' screen click on Microsoft, then click on TCP/IP under network protocol.
  5. Under Primary Network Logon it should now say Client for Microsoft Networks if not click on the small arrow at the end of that line and select Client for Microsoft Networks. Finally, click OK. You may be asked for the Windows 95/98 CD-ROM.
 Connecting:
  1. Now, at your desktop double click on the NMSU-Net icon. Enter your username (UNIX login ID) and password (NOTE this is your E-Mail password NOT your SSN), and click Connect. After the modem dials and connects a small screen will appear stating 'Verifying Username and Password' and then after a few seconds 'Connected at 14400 bps' and 'Duration: ' The connection process is complete.
