4. Select Connect to the Internet (the first one) and click Next.

5. Select “Set up my connection manually” and click Next.

9. On Internet Account Information type your username and password. Your username is the part of your NMSU e-mail address before the @nmsu.edu, and

your password is your e-mail password. If your account is on another NMSU server (like wilma), just type username@server, leaving out the nmsu.edu. (Premium users—password is what was given to you through e-mail)

10. Click Next, put a checkmark in “Add a shortcut on desktop” and click Finish. When the "Connect To" window appears, close it.

11. Go back into Network Connections and right click on NMSU-NET. Select “Properties” and click on the Networking tab.

12. “Type of dial up server” should say PPP; under “This connection uses the following items” have TCP/IP checked and highlight it. Click on Properties.

13. “Obtain IP address automatically” should be selected. Use the following DNS entries:

Under “Preferred DNS server”: 128.123.3.5

and under “Alternate DNS server”: 128.123.2.19

Then click “Advanced…”

14. Under the “General” tab make sure “Use default gateway on remote network” and “Use IP header compression” are checked. Click "OK" on all of the windows (should be 3). To connect, double click on the NMSU-NET icon on your desktop.

C: Troubleshooting

1. Problem: The modem is not responding when I try to connect.

*Solution A: Check all wires to the modem, making sure they are plugged in.

* Solution B: Double click My computer icon then click on View system information (on left hand side of menu). Click on Hardware, then Device manager. Click on Modems then Diagnostics. Click on Query modem. If you get a response then try to dial up again. If you do not get a response, or if the modem still is not responding, then go into the General tab under Modem Properties window. This will open a troubleshooting wizard that you can walk though. Make sure you select “I want the troubleshooter to investigate settings on this computer.

2. Problem: It dials, makes noise and gets to verifying username and password but gives

an error. If the error is: username and password invalid on domain

*Solution A: check your username and password. (username is the part of your NMSU e-mail address before the @nmsu.edu, password is your e-mail password for free users and the password premium sent to you for premium users.)

3. Problem: The modem never gets past the dialing screen…. (makes strange constant fuzzy sound)

*Solution A: I am on campus—

(Depending on how you have your desktop set up, there are a few options.) If you don't have one of the options, try the other option.

Double click on My computer then click on change a setting, (or click on control panel) click on printers and other hardware (or click on phone and modem). Highlight the location (normally the new location) click Edit.

In the box labeled to access an outside line dial for local calls dial 8

If you have call waiting, check To disable call waiting dial: *41#

*Solution B: I am off-campus—

(Depending on how you have your desktop set up, there are a few options.) If you don't have one of the options, try the other option.

Double click on My computer then click on change a setting, (or click on control panel) click on printers and other hardware (or click on phone and modem). Highlight the location (normally the new location) click Edit

If you have call waiting, check to disable call waiting dial: *70

4. Problem: I still can’t connect after doing all the above.

*Solution: Call Technical Assistance @ 646-1840. Please be at the computer when you call.
