Welcome to the New Mexico State University FERPA Tutorial!

Globally, there is growing concern about the privacy of personal information. Students are keenly aware and concerned about the collection of data and the exchange of information that occurs at institutions of higher learning. Transmission of personal data to vast numbers of recipients can easily occur and be produced as both printed and electronic media.
The federal government understands the need of students to have some control over the disclosure of information from their education record. Under the Family Educational Rights &Privacy Act (FERPA), students may limit disclosures, except in situations where release is required under the law.
New Mexico State University also considers the security and privacy of student records an important priority. This tutorial is designed to give you a base level of knowledge of the rules governing release of student information and to ensure that you understand your obligation for proper use and protection of student records. The completion of this tutorial is an important step in safeguarding student data and strengthening the trust of our students.
