Exploring DE Possibilities

Introduction to the Quality Matters Rubric for evaluating online courses. Exploration and evaluation of several online courses using the Quality Matters Rubric.

Interface Design and Learning Interaction

In this workshop you will learn about basic design elements that, when used effectively, will not only improve the look of your course, but also improve the quality of the learning experience. Through hands-on activities, you will examine a number of example courses to understand how the visual design of materials can detract from or enhance learning.

Web Accessibility Basics

In this workshop you will learn how to insure that distance learning materials and tools are useable to the largest possible number of users.

The problems faced by Web users with visual, hearing, mobility, and cognitive impairments will be discussed along with some simple strategies to help improve the online learning experience for these users. We will also examine some of the accessibility laws and guidelines that apply in New Mexico.

Converting Materials for the Web

This session will prepare participants to develop Web-based materials that include components generated from materials once handed out to students in class.

The workshop highlights three of the major software applications an instructor has for converting documents to HTML. Participants will learn how to convert MS Word files, convert MS PowerPoint files, and create PDF files using Adobe Acrobat. Participants receive instruction geared toward which option to choose, tips for effective use of the tools, and plenty of practice using typical class materials. HyperSnap, a screen-capture program for which NMSU holds a site license, is also introduced.

WebCT CE 4.1 Course Administration

Course administration includes how to add students into the course, set up the gradebook, and administer grading.

WebCT CE 4.1 Quiz Tool & Survey Tool

The Quiz Tool enables an instructor to include online quizzes within a WebCT CE 4.1 course. This half-day workshop covers how this tool is used, including building a questions database, setting up a quiz, defining quiz settings, administering the quiz, and understanding the grading process.

This workshop is one of our advanced workshops, meaning that participants should know how to log on to WebCT CE 4.1 and understand the basics of setting up a course and navigating through it.

Classroom Technology

This workshop is designed to show the participant how to utilize the equipment that is housed in the technology classrooms. Emphasis will be placed on using the document camera, projector, and switching system.

Basic Computing

This workshop is designed for the beginning computer user. Participants will be introduced to the basic elements and tasks when first using a computer.

Incorporating Library E-resources

Covers finding and using electronic library resources, including use of electronic reserves, interlibrary loan and document delivery, and how to create you own reserve lists using persistent URLs. Also includes resources for helping your students build their information and technology competencies. Includes exercise on creating PURLs.

Copyright and Fair and Ethical Use

Covers basics of copyright and fair use, including quiz. Also covers ethical use of information, particularly resources to help instructors teach students about avoiding plagiarism.

Using Communication Tools in WebCT CE 4.1

This workshop introduces users to synchronous and asynchronous tools in WebCT CE 4.1. Specifically, the chat, discussion, and e-mail tools will be discussed and integrated into your teaching strategy.
