Getting Connected

NMSU offers students, faculty, and staff a variety of ways to connect to the Internet and phone lines both on and off-campus.

Dial-up Service

NMSU provides free dial-up Internet service for all students, faculty, and staff. This service can be accessed on-campus or off-campus and has speeds from 26 Kbps - 56 Kbps. Follow the steps to receive free 26 Kbs - 56 Kbs dial-up Internet service.

Three steps to receive free dial-up:

  1. Make sure that you have a live telephone line and a modem.
  2. Read through the configuration instructions to make sure your settings are correct. Pick the correct operating system and follow the instructions. The configuration configuration instructions are available at ICT's Help Desk in the Computer Center, Room 140, or online at http://ict.nmsu.edu/ict/csc/DOCS/index.shtml.
  3. Register your computer to the NMSU network by following the on screen instructions at http://netreg.nmsu.edu/.

Premium Dial Up

Premium dial-up service is available to students, faculty, and staff that live in the Las Cruces area who want a high-speed connection directly to the NMSU network. Please note that a limited number of subscriptions available.

  • $15 a month
  • Up to 300 hours of usage a month
  • Up to 56 Kbps connection speed
  • Less than 5:1 users-to-modem ratio
  • All digital modems
  • Call 575-646-6007 to sign up

Wireless

Free wireless access is available for wireless devices in specific locations at the NMSU campus. Having wireless capabilities means that your laptop/notebook does not have to be connected through a phone line to be able to access the Internet.

Dorm Connections

Ethernet is a free high-speed Internet service offered to NMSU students living in Garcia Hall, Monagle Hall, Rhodes Garrett Hall (RGH), and the Vista Del Monte (VDM) buildings Q-X . This service offers network speeds up to 10 Mbps.

Steps to set-up Ethernet:

  1. You may need to buy an Ethernet card and cable if your computer does not currently have this equipment. You can purchase these items at the NMSU Bookstore.
  2. Install the card and attach the cable. Review the configuration instructions to make sure that your computer settings are correct.
  3. Register your computer on the NMSU network. Go to http://netreg.nmsu.edu/ and follow the prompts on this site to get Ethernet access.

DSL Access

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a high-speed Internet connection that is offered to specific groups and locations on campus for a monthly fee. Students living in Student Family Housing and in certain areas of Vista Del Monte are able to sign up for this service if they wish to use high-speed Internet. DSL is also offered to the Zeta Tau Alpha, Chi Omega, and Delta Zeta sororities.

The following fees apply:

  • $20.50 Monthly Fee
  • $32.50 Service Activation Fee
  • $16.25 Move Fee

Additional notes about DSL access:

  • Up to 5 Mbps connection speed
  • DSL connection requirements.
  • Sororities that want to set-up DSL service need to sign a service agreement at the Computer Center, Room 148.
  • Student Family Housing and Vista Del Monte residents can get additional information about DSL service by calling 575-646-5393.

Campus Phones

Basic telephone service is provided at no extra cost in all residence halls except Student Family Housing.
