How do I get a web page for my college/department/student organization?

There are many different options for gaining account access, depending on your affiliation with the University. Contact the Help Desk by phone (575-647-1840) or email (help@nmsu.edu) for more assistance.

Are there any charges associated with the account?

There are no charges for the account itself. Charges will be accrued if the account requires more disk space than its allotted quota (see FAQ #5).

What settings do I use to publish my web page?

Dreamweaver, Netscape Composer and Frontpage all have built in capabilities to publish web pages, but each requires different settings.

Settings for Dreamweaver
Settings for Netscape Composer

An alternative is to use an FTP client. Recommended FTP clients include WS_FTP or AbsoluteFTP for PCs and Transmit for Macs. You will need to type in your server. Ex: www.nmsu.edu. Then type in your username and password and you are ready to ftp your files.

How do I read my email?

You can read your mail several ways:

You can read your email by visiting the NMSU homepage and clicking on the e-mail button, or visit the page directly:

http://webmail.nmsu.edu/.

Enter your username and password. For "Server" make sure you select WWW from the drop down box.

You can also read your e-mail using a terminal emulator to telnet or SSH to the server. Make sure to connect to www.nmsu.edu. Please see:

http://ict.nmsu.edu/DOCS/UNIX/DOCS.Unix_pine.html

for detailed instructions on sending and receiving email in pine.

How do I change my password?

To change your password, you need to log on to your account. At the prompt, type:
passwd
You will then be prompted to enter your current password, and then your new password twice.

When choosing your password, remember not to use something easily guessed or common. A good password should be at least 6 characters long, something not found in the dictionary, and have a good combination of letters, numbers and special characters (!,@,#, etc.)

I forgot my password. How do I have it reset?

If you have lost or forgotten your password, contact webmaster@nmsu.edu. You will need to provide some proof of identity. For example, if you need access to a student club account, you'll need to have the club advisor contact us and verify your identity.
